Dreadlock Care

Washing your dreadlocks

You may have many questions about just how you take care of your dreadlocks. Their are many stigmas about people with dreadlocks that just aren't true like "they must be a drug addict" or "they must never wash their hair". Well I can assure you that this is all nonsense and its just another example of ignorance of the unknown. In fact you can wash your hair just like everyone else does! the only difference you need to use all natural organic shampoo and conditioner. Their are many dread locking shampoo's and other care products available. Some of these brands are, Raw roots, Naturally dreadlock, Dreadlock Empire, Wired and stoned and many more!! I personally don't use any dreadlock brands and I buy Sukin or OM SHE aromatherapy both are all natural cruelty free brand of shampoos. I also really like to condition my dreads with coconut oil or hemp oil.

What else do you need to know?

Maintenance. In the first couple of years you will need to visit your loctician to get maintenance done  because as your dreads mature they will move around, they will bubble, kink and get some loose hairs. how often do you need to visit? its recommended that you visit your loctician monthly for the first year after your locks are created. Then every 4 months after that and then every 6 months after that. Once your dreadlocks are about 2 years old you only really need to visit the loctician about once a year.

You can also do at home maintenance. This just involving a  palm rolling and using a 0.5mm crochet hook to catch those loose hairs and pull them back into place.

down below I have added some links to some videos that have been very helpful to myself on my own dreadlock journey.

Your can also give your dreads what is called an apple cider vinegar rinse this is great for getting rid of unwanted build up in your dreadlocks especially if you use lots of product in your hair! link below to show the process of the rinse.
